How to be the Best Remote Intern?

Remote working is rapidly becoming the new norm, and so are remote internships.

If you are new to remote working, it might initially be challenging to stand out and make the most of your internship.

To help you ease into the remote world, we’ve shared some tips to maximize your experience as a remote intern to make the best impression and learn the most about your career path.

1. Don’t be shy

Communication is key. When doing a remote internship, you will have to go the extra mile to communicate through Slack, emails or calls. Don’t be scared to reach out to your manager and co-workers and request weekly check-ins.

If you think of asking for help as something negative, you are more likely to procrastinate and miss deadlines on important tasks.

2. Find time to connect with mentors

In a remote internship, you don’t get the same everyday face-time with colleagues that you might enjoy in an office-environment.

In order to supplement this, consider requesting a standing video meeting with your manager, or requesting 15-minute “walk and talks” phone calls to get to know people in different functions.

3. Ask for feedback

In order to maximize your remote internship experience, be clear with your manager that you desire feedback so that you can continue to grow as a professional

Accept feedback gracefully; think of critique as a favor, because it will help you improve your work.

4. Document your achievements

Keep a record of major focus areas and accomplishments over the course of your internship, so that you can look back and reflect on your growth at the end of your internship.

5. Manage your time

While flexibility is one of the benefits of remote working, it should not affect the quality of your work. Set a schedule for yourself and turn off all distractions during this time to recreate an office environment at home.

Don’t let yourself get distracted by external influences like social media or your family.

6. Ask for a letter of recommendation

There’s no reason why working remotely during your internship should hold you back from any of the advantages of a traditional work environment.

Ask for a letter of recommendation because it can be extremely useful when applying for full-time work.
